Turkish theatre player Yunus Arakiz was arrested after being detained in Russia

Moscow Turkish Theatre player Yunus Arakiz, who was pointed as a target by İbrahim Atabey, who tore up the Qur'an in a video he published on YouTube on 16 November, was arrested in Russia. Theatre player Yunus Arakiz, who was pointed as a target by YouTuber İbrahim Atabey using phrases such as 'Political Islamist, Jihadist', was detained at the airport by the Russian police and then sent to prison to be jailed pending trial. Following the unlawful arrest, the Eurasian Union of Local Authorities (AYYB) President Dr. Hasan Cengiz made a reaction statement.

Turkish theatre player Yunus Arakiz was arrested after being detained in Russia

Dr. Cengiz included the following sentences in his press release: “A person who is sought for 11 crimes in Turkey and a fugitive in Russia, shot a video and tore up the Quran. This incident, which deeply upset millions of Muslims, of course, caused reactions. The General Directorate of Security has started legal initiatives to capture and extradite this person who is a fugitive in Russia. Muslims in Russia are also filing a criminal complaint with the Russian authorities about this person who keeps insulting Islam and the sacred values of Islam. However, Russia is simultaneously arresting a Turkish citizen and a player of the Moscow Turkish Theatre, Yunus Arakiz, who made an allegation, for instigating violence. While the person who insulted our Holy Book, the Qur'an, which is the most sacred value of 1.5 billion Muslims, is free and out, our esteemed theatre player Yunus Arakiz, who called for a criminal complaint against this person, is imprisoned. In Russia, where 15 million Muslims live, it is unacceptable that such an insult has not been sanctioned and that a theatre player who calls for legal action is imprisoned. As the Eurasian Union of Local Authorities (AYYB), we want to maintain our belief that this big mistake will be quickly corrected by the Russian decision-makers. At a time when close relations with Russia and civil diplomacy are at their strongest, this mistake will also damage the relations between the two countries. As the AYYB, we will explain to the Russian justice authorities until the end that the esteemed player Yunus Arakiz did not go beyond legal means, contrary to what is claimed, and that it is not possible for him to have any contact with jihadist groups, and we will be a close follower of this issue.”

“This arrest is not a simple incident. The target is the "Fifth Column" intervention in Turkish-Russian relations.”

Referring to the Fifth Column intervention, Dr. Cengiz said: “There are states that want to strike a blow to the Turkish-Russian relations, which have improved and reached a sustainable level, and there are people fed by these states. One of them is this person named İbrahim Atabey. An unpopular, simple social media user is used to insult Islam by tearing up the Holy Quran, and the reaction of Muslims living in Russia and Muslims around the world is tried to be measured. Another issue that the Fifth Column wants to measure is to imprison an innocent Turkish citizen, moreover a stage artist, through this play, and then to see how Turkey will react to that. We came face to face with this group, who never wanted Turkish-Russian relations to improve, during all our visits to Russia. The term Fifth Column identifies precisely with this group. This Anti-Turkish and Anti-Islamist group carries out espionage, sabotage, blackmail, deception and intelligence activities as well as propaganda activities. They are currently running it up the flagpole through Yunus Arakiz. Of course, we will tell the Russian authorities that this is a mistake and a deliberate setup.”
